New Boswell Brewing Company – Great Beer, Friendly People, and Klingon Opera?

The first thing you need to know about New Boswell is this: don’t give up on trying to find it.  It’s nestled down in an urban bunker of rocks and wire that encircles a patio (and the entrance) of this hidden gem of a brewery.  It reminded me of a conversation from the movie Swingers.

“For some reason, the cool bars in Hollywood have to be hard to find and have no sign.  It’s kind of like a speakeasy kind of thing.  It’s kind of cool. It’s like you’re in on some kind of secret, you know?  You tell a chick you’ve been some place, it’s like bragging you know how to find it.”

Once you do find it and make your way into the brewery, it opens up into an industrial-themed room with a cozy concrete bar and a very relaxed atmosphere that’s always stocked with friendly people (I’m told).  On this particular trip, the large sectional couch was already staked out by a group of bikers just finishing a ride from Muncie down the Cardinal Greenway trail.  Seemed like a great way to reward oneself after a long ride.  Another table was inhabited by a couple from Cleveland on their way to Indianapolis this weekend.

“Why Indy?” I asked.  ”Why not,” they said.

I suggested attending the 19th Annual Brew-Ha-Ha craft beer festival and their eyes lit up.  My good deed was done for the day.

It was now time to reward myself so I ordered a flight full of generous helpings of each of the 7 beers available on tap on this fine day.  I was fortunate enough to get to sample the Wit, Cream Ale, Ezra Brown, Landslide DIPA, McFly’s Irish Red, Raspberry Wheat, and Peacemaker IPA.

6 of the 7 beers I tasted. The Wit was consumed quickly and didn’t make the photo cut. Sorry, Wit.
I am not a beer judge nor will I ever pretend to be able to pick out a note of rhubarb or a hint of mums from a single taste.  I do believe, however, that I can taste a collection of beers and adequately share which ones stand out over the others…a “Best in Show,” if you will.  The Landslide, Peacemaker, and Raspberry Wheat all jumped out at me as being very memorable and were definitely the most popular among the other patrons.  In fairness to the Wit, I was very thirsty when I first arrived.  It never stood a chance.

I plan to return again and hope to try some, any, or preferably all of their offerings, including The Hoppit, Gingerbread Man, and Maelstrom Stout.  And even though I didn’t get to meet Brian “Enso” Harvey, New Boswell’s social media manager I had been in contact with, he did invite me to come back and sing some Klingon Opera during my next visit.  I’m not sure it was really an invitation or rather more of a challenge.  Regardless, Enso, consider both accepted.
